03. Develop

In the Develop phase of the product development process, we finalize the chosen concepts in the CAD system into a 3D production design. The consulting engineer now takes on a leading role in decisions regarding construction, material, and production methods. We combine over 30 years of accumulated expertise with hands-on experience and up-to-date knowledge for the best possible results.

Optimization of the Product Requirements Document (PRD)

Once the product is broadly defined and the design is "frozen," we can start the Develop phase. This involves reviewing the previously established Product Document Requirements. We verify that changes and adjustments made during earlier design phases have been correctly and fully documented.

Concept development in 3D CAD

In the final design, the key form elements are established, and we now proceed to determine the technical details. This includes any mechanics, electronics, or a combination of both. This phase is characterized by “creative visual thinking,” where various technical solutions are conceived and documented in a three-dimensional environment. As a result, this phase is often considered the most challenging. Due to intensive collaboration between engineers and designers, the previously defined design language is maintained while the product is further technically developed.

Prototyping

Prototypes are functional models of a product being used to test the mechanical construction, functionality, and part fit, helping to prepare for production. We often use the final prototype to ensure a smooth transition to production. With the help of advanced prototyping techniques, we create a nearly realistic model, representative of the final product.

Purchasing and cost price calculation

Once the concept has been defined in a 3D CAD system, we can make the first cost price inquiry. For this, we need more information than just the CAD files. We collect data on expected quantities, finishes, possible assembly, and packaging. We also take logistics, transport costs, and customs clearance fees into account. We compile as complete a package as possible to get an accurate cost estimate. Internally, we document this information in an RFQ (Request For Quotation).

Technical design evaluation

Based on the CAD files and the prototype, the technical team conducts a thorough product review. We evaluate elements such as functionality, technical details, and finishes, guided by the right production method for each part. We also consider assembly and disassembly options for service and recycling (circular economy and sustainability). Standards and regulations also play a crucial role and are part of this phase.

We produce prototypes in our own workshop.

Engineering for production

During this step, we document the product and all its components for production. After completing these activities, all details are known, allowing us to move towards production with a focus on efficiency and quality. In addition to knowledge of production techniques, specific material expertise is essential. At this stage, all aspects of product development come together.

Prototype for production release

A working prototype often serves as a benchmark for production release. We also use the prototype to illustrate the transition to production.

2D drawings

These technical drawings provide a clear overview of the structure, assembly, and all important production details. They also include finishes, critical dimensions, and, in the case of injection molding, visual points of attention regarding gate locations, parting lines, and ejectors.

Specification sheet

All relevant product information for production is documented in the specification sheets. This includes not only product-related details but also aspects related to quality, assembly, and logistics. Primary and secondary packaging is also taken into account. These documented specifications form the basis for further steps towards production.

Patent application

Filing a patent is the best way to safeguard the developed technical principle. This form of (inter)national protection prevents infringement and increases the product’s value. Depending on the product’s complexity, the application can be made at an earlier stage. Confidentiality is crucial in our field and must be ensured at least until after submission. GBO Innovation makers has extensive experience guiding patent applications and works with a large network of specialists.

Geert Scholte
Creative engineer

“To quickly gain insight into proportion, form, and function in concept stages, I aim to create 3D models early on. It's always great to see ideas come to life by combining the power of our 3D printers with the expertise of prototyping partners from both home and abroad.”

Time for the finishing touch!
